Multimodal Composing Exercise, 11/7/18

Directions for Remix/Remediate Exercise:

We’ll be using some of the concepts discussed in the Wysocki and Lynch chapter you were assigned for homework. Get into groups of four. Choose someone to be the spokesperson, and someone to be the recorder. Your task will be to remix or remediate one of the articles I’ve provided into a multimodal, video-based advertisement or PSA. Remember:

  • Remix = revise a piece to make something new that relies upon the same mode(s)
    • Think of remixes as we typically encounter them – songs made into new/similar songs
  • Remediate = revise to create something new that relies on different modes but retains the message

You should be using multiple modes – text, audio, images, etc. Limit recordings to about 60 seconds (average commercial length); still adverts should fill about one page.

The recorder in your group will keep a running list of the decisions you make during the composing process so that we can discuss the process along with your product. The spokesperson will do the talking when it’s your group’s turn to present.

You can leave the room if you need to (I actually might suggest it) to record video/audio; just be back by our agreed-upon time.

For editing, use the tools you downloaded or others that you feel comfortable with. (I also have a list compiled on the Helpful Resources page.) I’m here to help where I can with technology, too.

Time table: 15 minutes to develop a mini-design plan; 30 minutes to record/design; 20-25 minutes to edit
